Ajay Devgan, known more for his intense acting abilities
rather than his flamboyant looks is an actor who has carved a niche for
himself in spite of the fact that the number of flops in his career
outnumbers the hits.
Son of ace fight-master Veeru Devgan, Ajay was born on 2nd April and was
naturally attracted to action films. After graduating from Mithibhai College
in Mumbai, he took to directing video films on his own story lines.
Ajay began his career with the film Phool Aur Kaante (1991) opposite the
then debutant Madhoo (Who later starred in Maniratnam's Roja, a super hit).
This was soon followed by Shaktimaan (1993), Dilwale (1994), Vijaypath
(1994), Dhanwaan (1995) and Haqeeqat (1995) to name a few. Earlier known as
a dhishum dhishum action hero, Ajay shifted his image to a romantic lead,
setting the trend with Ishq (1997), a soft romantic comedy paired opposite
wife- Kajol (The two are blessed with a baby girl named Nysa). The image
became much prominent with Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha (1998). Then there was no
looking back for Ajay. It became a habit for him to deliver emotional roles
par excellence. And to add to it, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) worked
wonders. Zap, there was a sudden transformation; Ajay was sky high with his
looks, performances and the choice of films, which defined his characters.
Zakhm (1998) and Company (2002) gave him such recognition. Ajay's popularity
grew in leaps and bounds.
Then came Rajkumar Santoshi's Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002), and that was
it. The perfect one, which is still stoned into our minds even today.
Skyrocketed with the performance, Ajay bagged the actor in best lead award.
This too was an added feather to his cap, with his initial national award
for Zakhm. Whether it was Mani Ratnam's Yuva (2004) or Rituparno Ghosh's
Raincoat (2004), the actor time and again proved his acting abilities.
Ajay's roles know no limits. Even if they are not tailor-made for him, he
manages to fit in perfectly well. Deewangee (2002) saw Ajay in a much
different performance. Ajay's profile also includes fun flicks like Hum
Kisise Kum Nahi (2002), Ishq and Masti (2004).
Ajay still is rated as one of the best actors of the Indian cinema. His
recent Main Aisa Hi Hoon (2005), and Kaal (2005) are additional proofs to
this statement.
Ajay has bagged the following awards:
National awards-Zakhm Best Actor in a critic's role (2002)- The Legend of
Bhagat Singh Best Actor in a negative role (2002)- Deewangee
Ajay is most definitely one of the finest actors we have and definitely
worth an applause.
