From the streets of Bangkok to the high socialite elite life in Mumbai, Akshay Kumar's is a progeny to the many classic stars Bollywood just chanced upon. We had the dashing rowdy, Jackie Shroff who got noticed and was cast in Hero. Then there was bus conductor Rajnikanth, who went on to rule the Telugu Cinema industry. His contribution to Bollywood though small, has been remarkable. Falling in the same cadre is our Indian Bruce lee, Akshay Kumar.
Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia, alias Akshay Kumar, born on the 7th of September 1967, was trained well in dance and martial arts. He ran a food stall in Bangkok before he got noticed and cast. He made his debut in a thriller, Khiladi, opposite Ayesha Jhulka. The movie did well and Akshay got noticed. He did a series of movies after that, showing off his martial art skills. He was stereotyped as an action hero and his movies involved lengthy complicated action.
Khiladi seemed to be his trademark with a couple of movies coming out with that title in varied forms. There was Khiladiyon ka Khiladi, Sabse Bada Khiladi, Mr. and Mrs.Khiladi, International Khiladi and Khiladi 420. All of them bombed at the box office.
With a need to change his image from an action hero, he played different shades. He did a negative role in Ajnabee, comic role in Hera Pheri and Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, romantic in Dil to Paagal Hai and Dhadkan. Thus molding and growing in all. Rajkumar Santoshi's Khakee, where he plays a cop, did well and brought him back with a bang. The success of Mujshe Shaadi Karogi also helped.
On a personal front, he broke his long-standing relation with Raveena Tandon. Then he married actress Twinkle Khanna. The marriage ended in a divorce. Rumors run through the city that Priyanka Chopra is his new love. Akshay Kumar's professional life however looks bright. Way to go man!!!
